Why Interior Doors Stick in Summer (and How to Fix It)

August 15, 2026 RSJ Carpentry LLC

If your interior doors start sticking every summer, you are not imagining it. Wood is a natural material, and it responds to the humidity in the air. During Connecticut’s humid summer months, doors and their frames absorb moisture, swell slightly, and begin to rub, catch, or refuse to latch. When the dry air of fall and winter returns, many of those same doors swing freely again.

Why Humidity Makes Wood Swell

Wood is made up of fibers that act a bit like tiny straws. When the surrounding air is humid, those fibers take on moisture and expand. When the air is dry, they release moisture and shrink. This movement is small, often just a fraction of a millimeter, but on a door that already fits tightly in its frame, even a little swelling is enough to cause sticking. Solid wood doors move more than hollow core doors, and unfinished or poorly sealed edges absorb moisture fastest of all.

The most common places a door sticks are the top corner on the latch side and along the latch edge itself. That is because the door pivots on its hinges, and any swelling is magnified at the point farthest from them. You might also notice the door dragging on the floor if the bottom edge was never sealed.

Should You Fix It Right Away?

Before reaching for a plane or sandpaper, it is worth waiting to see whether the problem disappears when the weather changes. Removing material in the summer can leave a gap that is too wide once the wood shrinks again in winter. If a door sticks year round, though, the cause is usually more than humidity. Loose hinges, worn screws, a settling frame, or paint buildup on the edges can all keep a door from closing cleanly. In older Connecticut homes, foundations and framing shift over decades, and door openings are rarely perfectly square.

The Best Long Term Fix

Sealing is the single most effective way to reduce seasonal sticking. A properly sealed door, including the top and bottom edges that many people forget, absorbs far less moisture and stays more stable through the year. If your doors are bare on those hidden edges, that is often where the trouble starts. A professional can seal, adjust, or rehang a door so it works smoothly no matter the season.
